Doing business in a torn up world

It’s always hard to run a startup. But it’s twice as hard to do it in a country that’s new to you and after having lost the previous businesses.

That’s what Grigor and his family did after leaving Syria during the civil war and coming back to their historical motherland – Armenia. Both Grigor and his son used to have their own restaurants in Syria, but in Armenia they had to start from the very beginning. After three months of doing nothing, Grigor and his family opened a small café serving lahmajo, the Armenian national food all by themselves.

“Our city was being bombed and we made the decision to move to Armenia in six hours,” said Grigo.

In three months, café Kayts, named after Grigor’s son, has become one of the most popular places to eat lahmajo in Armenia’s capital, Yerevan. Despite its unfavourable location and small space, people all over Yerevan come here to eat the special traditional dish made in this tiny family café.
