Behind the Scenes

The TV workshop was with 10 young journalists coming from different EU member states. The overall workshop topic was “Fort Europa – looking at the European Union from beyond the wall. The cost of mobility: excluding non-Europeans from the EU.” 

Through three days of media workshop, the participants met with leading experts from different types of media: Tony Connelly from the Irish National Broadcaster RTE , Nina Haase from the German International channel Deutsche Welle and Luke Baker from the international news agency Reuters. For only 10 working hours, the team produced 17 minutes news broadcast on the topic of the workshop. 

The European Youth Media Days is an annual journalism event, taking place in the European Parliament. This year 100 young journalists from the 28 EU countries participated in the three-day event. You can see examples of previous European Youth Media Days on www.youthmediadays.eu.

The Orange TV Producer

Dobriyana Tropankeva, Denmark     [email]

My work is my way of living. I am used to a 100 hours working week, tight deadlines and hectic schedules. I graduated with Double Master’s Degree in Business and Finance Journalism from City University London and Aarhus University, Denmark. I have worked in the field of media and communications in more than 20 EU countries. I was Head of Press for events hosting up to 1500 participants. Additionally, I have 8 years of international experience in big projects with major international institutions such as the London School of Economics, University of Oxford, European Parliament, Deutsche Welle, City University London, The Council of Europe, The European Youth Press, AIESEC, The United Nations Youth Associations etc.

I started at Orange as a participant – I was writer at the Orange magazine produced for the International AIDS Conference in Vienna in 2010. Since then I have been project coordinator, editor, radio or TV producer in 8 international Orange and EYP projects. Currently I am project coordinator and editor at Orange magazine. I also work on the Public Relations of the European Youth Press.

Silvia Amaro

My name is Silvia Amaro, I am Portuguese and currently a third year journalism student at City University London.

My top dream since I was 12 is being a TV newsreader. I have worked for the BBC, for the broadcasting team of London2012 and at the moment I work for UK360. Though TV is where I want to work, I also have experience in radio and print.

I enjoy working with tight deadlines and I love learning languages. I speak Portuguese, English, Spanish, French and next I want to learn German.

In the near future I intend to develop my knowledge on European politics and hopefully to become a European correspondent.

Thales Camargo

Passionated about journalism, television, music and travelling. That’s how I would describe myself. I’m still a journalism student, but I already have big goals in the career: become a foreign correspondent. Currently I’m doing an exchange program in Germany due to the great television equipments they have, I really like the technical part of television as well! Back at home I’ve worked as a volunteer at the Daily News Show of the Federal University of Santa Catarina (TJUFSC) taking roles as moderator, editor, cameraman, producer and reporter.

Andreas Müller

My name is Andreas Müller. After having studied and worked in different countries in Europe and Latin America, , I am working as a freelance journalist in Vienna. Right now, I am writing for a Chilean-German newspaper as well as for a weblog reporting about the mobile phone and tablet market. Just recently, I also became part of a team that produces promotional videos for Vienna University of Economics as editor.

Video has always been my favourite field of work. During my Bachelor and Erasmus Mundus Master Studies of Media and Communication and afterwards, I worked as an intern or freelance journalist for several video production companies or at video departments of online magazines like SpiegelOnline.

Lena Odgaard

“I’m a 29 year old Danish radio and web journalist. Based in the Middle East for the past 2,5 years, I work for Danish and English language radio stations and write for American news sites. I cover mainly Israel-Palestine and report on a number of topics from social movements, children’s issues, culture and violent conflict, but as a common denominator my aim is to use the stories and voices of ordinary people to talk about politics.”

Dimitris Pogkas

I’m Dimitris Pogkas and I’m a recent graduate of Communications and Mass Media Bachelor in the University of Athens, Greece. Tangled up in my country’s worst socioeconomic crisis of the last 40 years, I got my way into journalism working for a well-respected online business and finance monitor, focusing mainly on young and startup entrepreneurship and technology innovation. The last months I have taken up more editorial-kind of responsibilities in the medium I’m working for, while managing its social presence and potential partnerships. Covering entrepreneurship issues is really fulfilling, because I do not only get to meet every day new, young people trying to create on their own under current circumstances and despite the problems they’re facing, but also to promote their work and help them connect with each other.

While being at a crossroads about future education choices, I’m trying to explore opportunities european institutions and youth organisations are offering for media makers, since the whole european project is really appealing to me from both a professional and a personal point of view.

Dimitry Romanovski

For last two years I was a BBC Russian Service reporter in Moldova and Transnistria. During this period I also worked for Transitions Online magazine based in Czech Republic as well as several national newspapers and TV channel in Moldova.

I am always trying to mix studies with work. Currently I am an Erasmus Mundus scholarship holder studying International Master in Russian, Central and East European Studies at the University of Glasgow.

I graduated with BA in Communication Sciences at the Moldova State University. Simultaneously I did a 1.5 year non-degree course in Business Journalism at the Higher School of Economics in Moscow where I worked as a reporter at the Russian International News Agency “RIA Novosti”. After graduation I continued my work in “RIA Novosti” office in Moldova as a reporter and media producer.

Mainly I am active in online journalism but I don’t restrict myself to a specific area covering topics from sports to international relations.

Niels Timmermans

I’m Niels Timmermans, living in Belgium and currently working my way trough a Bachelor of Applied Language Studies (German – Italian) at the University of Leuven. As a little child, I only had one big dream: becoming a journalist. During my school career, I have been working (and am working) hard to become one. Nowadays, I’m writing for Stampmedia, the only recognized youth-press agency in Belgium. My articles and videos have been published in important Belgian newspapers such as De Standaard and Het Nieuwsblad.

My favorite topics are politics (Europe), but also sports, especially cycling. Since 2006, I own a website about a famous Belgian cyclist, which gets about 20.000 visitors each year.

Anna Christensen, Denmark

My name is Anna Christensen, a 26 year old student from Denmark. I am in the middle of my masters in journalism and social science at Roskilde University. My primary focus is on tv-journalism and I love to tell stories through pictures.

I spend most of my previous semester as an intern at DR – The Danish Broadcasting Corporation – where I participated in the development of a morning news show and a late night debate program.

At my bachelors I started a news show for students. Together with other young volunteers we did all the filming, editing and we even build a news studio from scratch. I have a passion for politics, EU and foreign affairs.

Marine Leduc, France     [email]

My name is Marine and I am from Nantes, France. My main addiction is to travel and I prefer to spend my money in a flight ticket than in shoes. Armed with my diploma in European Journalism, I spent few months in a radio in Montreal and two months in Palestine as a volunteer for youth organizations. I am now living in Bucharest, Romania, where I am doing a European Voluntary Service in the arts and multimedia sphere.
In 2012, I was an intern for the European magazine cafebabel.com where I knew more about European press and media. I like to write about arts and culture from another country but I do not forget what affects me the most: injustice, human rights, and discrimination, especially against Roma people, women and Muslims.

TV Workshop Speakers

Luke Baker, bureau chief of Reuters

Luke Baker is the bureau chief of Reuters in Brussels, overseeing a team of 20 print, TV and photo journalists covering the EU, Belgium and NATO. Luke joined Reuters in South Africa in 1997, covering a dozen countries in southern Africa, including conflicts in Congo, Zimbabwe and Angola. From 2000-2003 he was based in Rome, reporting on Italian politics, economics and social issues. In 2003 he was assigned to cover the invasion of Iraq, as a reporter embedded with U.S. forces, and then spent 2-1/2 years in the country following the aftermath of the invasion and the ensuing civil war. In 2006 he was assigned to Jerusalem as a Middle East correspondent before spending three years in London as the defence correspondent, focusing on policy in Iraq and Afghanistan. Born in the UK, he attended university in the United States and began his career in New York, working for the MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour, a nightly TV news programme.

Tony Connely, Europe Editor, RTE (Irish radio & television)

Tony Connely reports on a wide range of EU and European current affairs for Ireland’s national broadcaster, for television, online and radio. Recent coverage has included all aspects of the Eurozone financial crisis, European politics, environmental, social and cultural affairs. He also covers Middle East affairs.

Nina Haase, Deutsche Welle

Nina studied Applied Languages Europe in Germany, England and France and went on to do an MBA in International Management and Intercultural Communications. In 2005, she joined DW and became a host and producer of various radio programmes, such as “Living Planet”. She did research for Deutsche Welle in Beijing before the Olympics, with the Aborigines in Australia, and with women empowerment groups in rural India. When television called, Nina moved to Berlin where she worked in DW’s “Journal” team, both as a presenter and a reporter.

Nina feels she has come full circle now that she is in Brussels, where she has Europe quite literally at her doorstep.

Rikard Jozwiak , Radio Free Europe

Rikard Jozwiak is the Brussels Correspondent for Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty (RFE/RL). RFERL is an American media organization broadcasting news in 21 countries where a free press is banned by the government or not fully established such as Belarus, Iran and Russia. Jozwiak is responsible for daily reporting from the EU institutions and NATO about the latest political developments. Prior to joining RFE/RL, he worked as the press officer at EU office of Amnesty International and as a reporter for European Voice covering EU affairs. Jozwiak has a Masters in Journalism from the University of Lund, Sweden and a Masters in European Politics from the College of Europe. He speaks English, French, Polish and Swedish.

About the European Youth Media Days 2013:

Social movements, new political parties and civil society protests – what is in the future of the European Union (EU)? Who is working to ensure change and sustainability of the Union? What has been the actual impact of #Occupy and other movements on the policy-makers in Europe? The 2013 edition of European Youth Media Days, which is organised by the European Parliament in collaboration with the European Youth Press, will focus on current issues of the EU and on the upcoming parliamentary elections. The European Youth Media Days is one of the biggest events in Europe dedicated to young journalists. Participants experience three days of media workshops, political discussions, hands-on media production and valuable insights into the European Parliament and European media. They interact with high-level European politicians, professional journalists and experts and engage in intercultural exchange through practical media production.
