Tackling Hate Speech - European Youth Centre 2012

Confronting hate speech – Video

Council of Europe Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland was the keynote speaker at a two-day conference on tackling hate speech in Budapest from 27-28 November 2012.

The conference was organised by the Council of Europe and the EEA and Norway Grants aiming to look at the nature and extent of hate speech in today’s Europe – especially online – and to discuss different ways of tackling intolerance whilst defending free speech.

It was preceded by a training course on hate speech for popular young bloggers. One of them was Nicole Currie from the European Roma Rights Centre in Hungary. She presented the conclusions and recommendations of the workshop “Action and Campaigning against Hate Speech”.

The forthcoming Council of Europe youth campaign on tackling hate speech was also presented at the conference by Shannon Stephens, Representative of the Advisory Council on Youth and of the follow-up Group of the project “Young People Combating Hate Speech Online”, Council of Europe.
